Fun and Simple Independence Day Recipe

I'm the sweet and salty queen, y'all!  I love having some M&Ms with peanuts or popcorn with chocolate - it's just the perfect combination every single time.  With Independence Day right around the corner, today I'm sharing a super easy, super yummy patriotic snack that is almost too cute to eat!

You'll need:

  • One bag of pretzel twists or pretzel rods (I chose the twists!)
  • Chocolate/candy melts
  • Patriotic sprinkles
  • Wax or parchment paper

In a saucepan (or in the microwave), gradually melt the chocolate or candy melts.  I used white chocolate for an extra-festive look!  Stir occasionally to avoid scalding.  I popped our white chocolate melts in a microwave-safe bowl, zapped them for 30 seconds, stirred, and then microwaved for another 30 seconds.  Super easy!

Once completely melted, stir again to ensure there are no lumps or clumps left.

Using a fork, dip your pretzel into the melted liquid (carefully!) and coat the pretzel entirely.  Once coated, place the pretzel onto wax paper and cover with patriotic sprinkles!  Do one pretzel at a time (or two, if you have a helper!) to avoid the candy melts drying onto the pretzels too quickly.

As a side note - I had a really difficult time finding patriotic sprinkles!  I checked Michaels, Target, and even Walgreens before finally settling for a sprinkle "variety set" at Walmart.  If you find a great patriotic sprinkle set - comment and let me know where!

Once the pretzels are cool and the chocolate/candy melts have hardened, simply lift off the waxed paper!  These patriotic pretzels would be great treats for teachers or camp counselors, co workers, or next door neighbors.  They're also fun for a snack by the pool or while sitting in the sand!

My favorite thing about this recipe is that it can make a whole bag of pretzels or just enough for a couple of quick snacks!

If you're using pretzel rods, this would be a super kid-friendly activity!  Just dip half of the rod into your saucepan and then lay onto wax paper and cover with sprinkles.  I'd recommend pretzel twists for older kids or kids at heart!
